Mid-February, we were up at 4 am and on the water at first light to troll for Mackerel. Our first hit was at 6 am trolling over 1-mile reef off the Gold Coast. The reel screamed off, there was a little too much drag on the line and lots it. That got the excitement juices going. Unfortunately, the next 6 hrs of prospecting and trolling were a bore. We headed up towards Jumpinpin Bar as we'd been told the bait and birds were going off. Sure enough, there was Tuna busting up and Mackerel swimming in packs but they still didn't want a bar of our trolling lures. We had hard bodies, livies, and skip baits trolling out the back. I got sick of watching fish so I decided to cast at them with a 35g metal slug and micro jigging rod.
A Mack Tuna took the lure, I thought it was a mackerel at first by the length of it spearing out of the water. He was still a fun fight but it was no mackerel. Before the season ends I must catch a mackerel so stay tuned for that.
